How to Start a Career in SAP: Skills, Training and Your First Role

SAP runs the core business processes of thousands of companies, from manufacturers and retailers to banks and governments. As more of them move to SAP S/4HANA, the demand for people who understand both SAP and business keeps growing. For graduates, especially those with a Computer Science and Engineering background, it is one of the most rewarding career paths in enterprise technology.

Functional or technical: two ways into SAP

Most SAP roles fall into one of two groups.

  • Functional consultants understand a business area and configure SAP to support it. Popular modules include FICO (finance and controlling), MM (materials management) and SD (sales and distribution).
  • Technical consultants build and extend SAP. They work with ABAP, CDS views, RAP and SAP BTP to create reports, interfaces and new apps.

If you enjoy business processes and problem solving with users, start functional. If you love coding, start technical. Many strong consultants eventually learn a bit of both.

Skills employers look for

  1. Solid SAP fundamentals in at least one module, including how it connects to others.
  2. Business understanding. Knowing why a purchase order or a month-end close works the way it does matters as much as knowing the transaction.
  3. Hands-on practice on a real SAP system, not just theory.
  4. Communication. Consultants explain complex things simply to users and managers.
  5. A learning mindset. SAP keeps evolving, and the best consultants keep up.

Why structured training makes the difference

Self-study videos can teach you where the buttons are, but they rarely prepare you for real projects. Structured training gives you a clear path, live explanations of how concepts connect, and practical assignments that show you what you have really understood.

At Data ETL, our SAP training program runs for three months, with live classes two to three days a week, complete learning resources, and mentors who help you outside class hours too. Our goal is simple: no learner is left behind.

From training to your first role

The hardest step in any SAP career is the first job, because most companies ask for project experience. That is why real-world exposure matters so much. Learners who perform well in our program may be selected for an internship at Data ETL, working on real projects and workflows. Strong interns may then be recommended to companies in our national and international network.

Learn. Practice. Experience. Grow. The order matters, and skipping a step shows in interviews.
